How Long?

Does it take Janie  to write a book?

Janie, generally, takes 3-5 years to do research before she writes a book. 

 

Where does Janie find her Research?

Basic research practice...

Janie always starts her research in a library and reads as many things as she can on the subject she is learning about, next she finds museums that have exhibits concerning her research subject, and finally she looks for primary source material to back the  information she has already learned at libraries and museums.

 

Does Janie go to where history has taken place?

Traveling is important!

Janie tries to go to every location listed in her books to get the feel for the natural setting of the story and history.

Not only is Robert Pacquette in trouble at school, but he is being punished with an extra assignment!  As Robert interviews an old iron miner for a history report, he is swept back into the life of Robert Friggens, a boy from Albany, New York, who travels to a new life in Michigan's Upper Peninsula in the mid-1800s.

 

The son of one of the first doctors in the area, Robert meets a wide variety of colorful characters including Michael Shane, a rough but likeable ex-miner.  Michael takes Robert with him by dogsled to Green Bay, Wisconsin, where they collect the mail for the mining settlement at Marquette.  When Michael is injured and his replacement never arrives, Robert must travel the wilderness trail alone back to Marquette.  To add to his trouble, he is pursued by a thief.  And who is the mysterious Indian?  Is he a friend or an enemy?

 

Readers will find it difficult to put down this engaging book as they share in Robert's adventure.
