Writing Tips
1. Sit down and write something every day. It can be a poem, a short story, a joke, or anything, whether long or short. It should have a beginning, a middle, and an end.
2. Collect interesting words to help develop your vocabulary. If you are reading something and come across a new word, copy it and look it up. This will help build your vocabulary and communication skills.
3. Read much and often. The types of stories and books you like to read will also be the types (genre) of stories and books you would like to write. Find your niche by exposing yourself to different kinds of stories.
4. Keep a writing journal of interesting events from the newspaper or the news. Record fascinating personal events, overheard conversations, and detailed observations. All these “bits” of information make a helpful background in your stories.
5. Be a people watcher and record what you find interesting. Different types of clothes, scars, limps, accents, interactions, voice levels. All of these things help you to develop the voice for your story.
